Suggestion for the Site
Submitted by Pam K on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 18:22.David, I fairly sure I am in the wrong place, but the title of this included "what's new and what's missing" and asks for our input, so pass this along to wherever it is appropriate.
Since I have found this site I know I will be using it predominately as my go-to. I am using it as my opening page for Mac Safari. This is what I believe would improve the user-friendliness:
What about adding a page that can be either the START page of our browser or the FIRST page we see after we have become a member of any of the vast Bible.org family (all current and future sites.)
DAVID, REALLY WEIRD STUFF IS HAPPENING. There is a long bar that has run through this as I'm typing. I have lost paragraphs. Several are permanently gone. Others reappeared as I have used the sidebar to move up and down trying to see where my writing is going.
This page could include posts from all of the 3 sites: tie the thing together. Right now I am having emails sent so that I don't have to go through all 3 sites to discover what applies to me.
On this START page could be our PM etc. info.
It could record our time spent logged on; actual active time--just let us see a summary of where we are spending our time. It could also show all our watched sites and posts across the entire platform (similar to what happens when we request to be notified by email--but in your site--not our email accounts.)
If you as staff have needs across the 3 sites, this would be one place to see it altogether. For instance, I would be happy to do some volunteering in reading articles into audio. I know I have seen it somewhere. If I look for it, I will eventually find it. But why not put that sort of thing front and center.
My belief (and keep in mind that this is just how it feels to me) is that the site is very complex. It is hard for me to locate things--I'm definitely not a Type A, so although I know what I want, doing searches doesn't seem to get me what I'm looking for, and I will absolutely never remember where I saw a thing. I've taken to writing it down in a notebook--never had to do this in any other site.
I opted to have notifications sent to my email--best thing I have done so far. When I access my normal email account and have things clearly marked (Church issue, Content Edit, etc.) and click on the link--wow, it's so fast and easy. However, when I'm plowing through the maze of the sites, though, it's time consuming and frustrating.
A site map would help, but I have done a search for that and don't find it. I'm sure it's there--but where. For example, I am having trouble getting Friends and Foes to work. Jennifer PM'd me with a legitimate question: Which site were you on--Users, Bible.org, etc. I have NO CLUE. Today I figured out that it is in Users--but it took time and effort.
You all put enormous amounts of effort into this. That is obvious because whatever time of day or night I am on, the staff is working. Or, the answers I get to questions come sometimes from late evening or into the night. You are dedicated!
What I am stumbling around trying to tell you is that I am not a computer genius. Is there some way to make the site easier to navigate. The info that is here is awesome; but hidden. Of course, the more I'm on it, the more I'm figuring it out. But I believe others are having the same issue, but not sticking it out until they get competent. I'm coming up with that conclusion from looking at the Reads to Posts numbers.
Also, I have a question about why you don't want an article or similar info to appear on more than one site. What we are talking about gets buried. I don't even know where my own stuff is half the time. For example, I stumbled into the fact that My Account would let me see some info I was looking for--but exactly how do I get to My Account. On this page it's in the upped right-hand corner--Great. But it's not always there.
Another example is a set of instructions Jennifer gave me to work on Friends and Foe. It asked me to start by going to the User Control Panel. I couldn't find it. It probably took me over an hour total (and two days) before I finally saw it. I tried doing a search for it in all three sites, but never did get it to come up. Knowing it HAD to be somewhere, I just keep looking. It was in very small print, in the upper-right hand corner somewhere. I had been through every heading and gone through every pull down looking for User Control Panel.
That's what I'm suggesting for a START page. Could this work to pull the entire project together. I understand the NET Bible doesn't need to be joined into this. It is easy to get to and easy to use.
When I look at the dates of people's responses to some of the blogs and forums, they are years old and many times are mainly staff or secondary staff. The vision of this site is so absolutely awesome, I'm just trying to give some input on what would make it easier for us dumb bunnies to use. And it is all from my perspective--which may not be the norm. Also, please DO NOT take this as criticism in any sense of the word. I'm telling you it is my lack of electronic skill that is creating some of my issues. However, I will stick it out until I get it figured out because it is so useful. Your group is just so far above my head electronically that I thought I would try to explain to you what it is like from down here on the kindergarten level.
There are many of us who are soldiers of the Lord who have been looking for just this concept. The issue now seems to me to be making it simple enough for us to really benefit from it.
