A Martial workout!!

GREETINGS; I can tell you assuredly (aspholos in Greek, Sssh, It one of my first Greek words) that in today’s world, there is little room for leaving the cave to conquer a wild animal for dinner, unless of course you consider Wal-Mart a bit animalistic... ::LAUGHING:: However, sitting on the couch does me no better than sitting at the office.
After 5 Years of TaeKwonDo, I can tell that the couch is my ENIMY!!!!!! I recently embarked on a new workout regimen, an hour of Karate every morning. Today was day fifteen. The movements of the martial arts in succession are referred to as a "FORM". For each belt level, there is a particular FORM that must be mastered. uh... mastered NOT perfect.
Before beginning any Forms, I always warm up, 50 crunches, 30 leg-lifts (both at same time), 20 push-ups, 20 laps around the room, and one Hundred Jumping jacks. Followed immediately, (after a sip O’ water), by some stretching; lots of stretching. Touch the floor, Chinese splits, touch toes, etc. Now it’s time for some real exercise.
What I have found out is that simply practicing the various forms can be a valuable work out. For those that have done martial arts, you are aware of what I speak about. A Form is not simply walked through but each move is done with enough intensity to be effective in the reality of an actual altercation; which we would just assume walk away from then actually have to become involved in.
For those that have not; if you have good knees, try assuming a horse stance, like you’ve seen in movies. Knees bent as close to a right angle, (like a square). Place your left fist as close to you ribs and back as possible, so you can see your fingernails, and hold your right fist out like you punched something. GREAT!!!
Now when one hand is out the other is next to the ribs. Now put your punching fist next to your ribs and punch with the left fist. This is cross punch. Do it fast and with intensity, back ~n~ forth, right punch left punch, etc. All the punches and blocks can be done from this position. Give it a try.
Don’t forget to make sure you are fit enough for aerobic exercise. Your Doc. will be able to help there, If you have one.
Great JOB!!!!!
All we can do is praise the Lord for the abilities we have and use them for his Glory. A lot of times I get to man a shovel... Got to keep in shape.
Welcome to my warm-up, that took about 15 minutes. Now it’s time for me to go practice my forms and self defenses.
I’m tired already
Anyway,
Grace and Peace
Robert

How true!
Submitted by Jennifer Dent on Tue, 09/15/2009 - 10:27."The couch is our enemy" ! How true that is!
My favorite part of practicing Tae Kwon Do was always the patterns. I could do them slow and controlled with intensity or do them fast for speed either way they are a great workout!! There are so many misconceptions in the christian community about martial arts that a great form of exercise isn't even attempted!
Speaking of warm ups - soon I'll be off to the gym myself!
Thanks for the great reminder that we need to give God the glory with everything we do - including our workouts!

Staying Strong
Submitted by guykickinit on Wed, 09/16/2009 - 23:18.17 days and still stickin’ to it!!! One key to keeping in shape is.... wait for it, "PRAYER". I find that if I forget to start my day with a word with the Lord, no matter how long, my day is a struggle. I have on occasion used the time directly after to take a quiet moment to have some good prayer. The body is feeling a little fatigue and becomes quiet in a resting position. I can be more focused.
I Like to remind myself to thank God for the ability to take a part in the physical reversal of some of the damage I have done to myself throughout my life. I still need the Ultimate Physician, Jesus Christ, to finish the healing process. But, for me, I feel that I need to take the first step to recovering my health, while at the same time praying for strength to stand firm to the end of my workout.
The hard part is those mornings, like today, when I just don’t feel like it. However, I begrudgingly drag my sorry self to the dojo and flop on the floor. While I’m there I might as well do something, and so it begins.
The Best way to beat the days of no enthusiasm is to keep taking the first step. If you lean forward, the lack of balance will cause the other foot to follow.
WOW, the day is over and I’m looking forward to tomorrow's work out.
Grace and Peace

OMGOSH, Im losing Track
Submitted by guykickinit on Mon, 09/21/2009 - 22:38.One of the Dificult things I run into, specifically today, Is the energy to get out there and do it, just one more time. Had a great Bible study last night, a few cups of coffee, and voila' up half the night and still had to get up early for the day. Ok, so my days aren't that early but still; dragging yourself out the gym, or dojo, or wherever, is still dificult if you dont sleep well.
It's a good thing i started this program on sunday morning, aug 30. so all I have to do is count 7's each week to remember how long i've been up to this. I was just countin' days till I remembered that August has 31 days. So today was day 23, and a couple days I put in a whole extra hour, and a couple extra half hours. Total = apprx. 28 hours in 23 days.
Here's the part I really detest. See... I started so I could lose a couple pounds. Well... Not yet. By week two I added 3.5 pounds of water weight due to micro muscle damage. After week 4 my weight is back to 204, but my stamina is such that I am not totally fatigued after 1.5 hours of cardio. I shoot for an hour, but some days I feel I could just go and go. DARN clock!!!! Gotta work though.
Life has a whole bunch of things that try to convince us that its useless! Results dont happen fast enough, redundant activity, LIFE, alarm clock failure, etcetera. The main thing is just to GET OUT THERE and assume the first position. For me its crunches. I go and lay on the floor for a second, and then it happens. LOL, you'll like this. I start calling myself names, like ok Mr. lazy bones, and off I go.
I just keep remembering that it takes 21 days to change a habit. 7 to withdraw from the old one, 7 days to get used to not doing the old one, and 7 days to program the new one in. However, even after all that, it's still a struggle sometimes to stay away from the couch. (my old habit)
Having remembered the weapons forms I once learned, I now have 15 different forms (or patterns) to practice. It takes me about an hour to warm up and complete one run through each. Now I just need someone to be my throw dummy for the 75 self-defenses, and then If I get a chance, maybe some Aikido. A friend of mine wants to practice Jiujitsu but I've discovered, while being an excellent workout, I just dont like it. Too much like wrestling. Yucko. Something about two sweaty guys rolling around trying to outlock the other, I just cant get used to. I can watch it but sure dont wanna participate in it.
Here's the Key! PERSEVERE

We often use Dory's song here
Submitted by Jennifer Dent on Wed, 10/07/2009 - 16:19.We often use Dory's song here at our house!
On Sunday I begin my own new workout program 6 days on 1 day off! And you right the hardest part is getting started...
I liked your key "Persevere"
While my boys and I did TKD we all had to memorize the Tae Kwon Do Aims to Achieve
Modesty - being umble and unassuming
Couretesy - being polite and respectful
Integrity - doing the right thing; ALWAYS
Perserverence - NEVER giving up
Indomitable Spirit - never WANTING to give up
If only everyone would live every day this way - I don't always and I know I should!

i know DORY
Submitted by guykickinit on Wed, 10/07/2009 - 17:58.I know Dory, "Keep on swimming" LOL. Well i Have a story.
All the hard work is paying off. I am playing an intregal part in the creation of a new Karate school that is just going to Rock.
We just had our First Instructors meeting last night which turned into 3 hours of self defenses. We went over the entire Adult self defense curiculmn of 40 different self defenses and adjusted them for practicality. We have a few more meetings to go before we are done writing the entire Curiclumn but we are well on our way. 2 more weeks and we open.
I am going to suggest those precepts.
